Ball Hockey was first established
in Innisfil in the spring of 2003, consisting of 150 children in 3 divisions.
The children that year ranged in age from 5 to 13 years old. They played
their games out of the Stroud Curing Club located in the north end of the
Stroud Arena complex. A little modification such as portable boards, and
a tabletop score clock were used, and worked out nicely. The first year
we sent one team, The Innisfil Wave to the Ontario Provincial Championships.
We also participated in Innisfil Summerfest in 2003, running 2 ball hockey
courts at Innisfil Beach park. 2 Barrie Colt players took part in the action,
signing autograghs but also playing in the games and giving the kids tips.
In our second year we increased registration
to over 200 children in 4 divisions, the 2 younger divisions (Tyke and Novice)
played in the Stroud Curling Club and the 2 older divisions (Atom and Peewee)
played in the Stroud Arena, and the Lefroy Arena. We sent 3 teams to the
Ontario Provincial Championships held in Barrie in late July 2004. The Novice
Wave made it to, and won the B championship game over Newmarket 3-2 giving
us our first Ontario Championship. We also expanded, and improved our in
house Summerfest Tournament to include 4 ball hockey courts and introduced
new games such as the Top Shot and Radar Challenge. we had a barbeque to
feed the crowd, and free bottled water for all the players.
2005 was an outstanding season with
registration growing to 270. The Novice division increased from four to
six teams and the growth was felt through all divisions. Summerfest again
was a great success!
In 2006 registration was increased to
well over 300 players in six divisions. Bantam was added as a new division
and ran with 4 full teams, in fact 26 house league teams played in 2006
with another 5 provincial teams added. The first Bantam Wave went to Chatham
in July to represent Innisfil At the Ontario Provincial Championships and
showed very respectfully. The Atom Provincial Wave Team won The Metro Cup
in Mississauga and the Tyke Wave won the Ontario Provincial B Championship
in Belleville giving Innisfil it's second Provincial title.
In the future we are looking to increase
registration to allow everyone a chance to play this wonderful, affordable
game. We are looking forward to the completion of the new Multi Use recreational
facility in which our members can play and the possiblility of holding Provincial
Championship games in Innisfil in the future. But mostly, we are looking
forward to the return of our players and ther families and the continued
fun and simplicity of the game anyone can play. |
